New Zealand thought their new-ball effort could still potentially change the tide in their favour, even though the chase appeared straightforward. Rony Talukdar miscued a shot to mid-on in the second over due to Adam Milne’s speed.
While Bangladesh cricket team was on track to reach their goal, a third wicket in nine overs provided New Zealand cricket team with the opportunity they needed, with another wicket exposing the lower-middle order. However, this did not cause enough harm to the Bangladesh squad, resulting in their victory.
Bangladesh’s bowlers deserve credit for limiting New Zealand to a below-par score on a somewhat two-paced pitch.
This was Bangladesh’s first T20I victory in New Zealand and their first in three attempts in Napier. The match has now moved north to Mount Maunganui for the last two games. This was the hosts’ third loss in six meetings at McLean Park.
Now Mitchell Santer and New Zealand will have to go back to the drawing board to find solutions if the series is to be saved.
